The University of Cape Town (UCT) has been ranked the top South African university and one of the top 10 universities in the Brics countries, which include include Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
According to the QS World University Rankings, UCT is ranked in ninth place in the world.
Of the top 100 institutions, eight were from South Africa and also include the University of Witwatersrand, Stellenbosch University and the University of Pretoria.
UCT’s spokesperson Mologadi Makwela says, “Our position in the Brics rankings is significant because Africa needs to be on the agenda of the developing world. We operate in a world in which knowledge is the main currency and there are plans to improve Africa’s participation in this.”
