A woman was killed and another seriously injured after a light motor vehicle rolled off the N3 highway in Hammersdale, KwaZulu Natal.
ER24 paramedics, along with fire services, responded to the scene and on arrival they found the crumpled vehicle on the D706 road parallel to the highway. A lifeless body of a female lay further up the embankment.
Paramedics rushed over to the patient and found that she already succumbed to her fatal injuries. Nothing more could be done for the patient and she was declared dead.
It is understood that the deceased had been hit by the vehicle while attempting to cross the highway.
When paramedics assessed the patient in the light motor vehicle, they found that the female patient had sustained serious injuries to her neck chest and leg.
Rescue services had to use the jaws-of-life equipment in a 45 minute operation to remove a large branch that had fallen onto the vehicle, as well as to remove the roof of the vehicle to gain access to the patient.
Once freed, paramedics treated the patient and provided her with advanced life support interventions. She was thereafter transported to Hammersdale Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
It is understood that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to collide with the pedestrian, roll down the embankment and collide with the tree.
Local authorities were on scene to investigate further.
