A car passenger died and the driver was wounded when they were caught in what was believed to be shoot-out between taxi bosses in Midrand on Thursday, Gauteng police said.
“A stray bullet hit the passenger who died, and the driver of the car was shot in the right arm,” said Captain Augustinah Selepe.
The shooting happened on the corner of the K101 and Le Roux roads in Midrand at 07:30.
“A group of taxi owners in their private vehicles were shooting at each other. We have not confirmed this. We suspect it,” she said.
The car drove by during the shooting and stray bullets hit it.
The taxi groups drove away afterwards, said Selepe.
“Police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder. The motive at this stage is unknown.”
No arrests had been made.
