Serious concerns have been raised about the level of corruption in South Africa’s prisons with the Civil Society Prison Reform Initiative (CSPRI) saying not enough is being done to prevent horrendous crimes.

The City Press on Sunday revealed that inmates at Leeuhof Prison outside Vereeniging pay warders to help them smuggle in everything from hard drugs and groceries to juvenile prisoners for them to rape.

The allegations are arguably the most serious since the Jali Commission of Inquiry into corruption, maladministration and violence in the country’s prisons.jail

The CSPRI’s Lukas Muntingh says the allegations don’t come as a surprise.

“It is indeed regrettable that these allegations continue to be made. The extent of which the Department of Correctional Services has followed and implemented the Jali comission’s recommendations is unfortunately not satisfactory.”
