The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape on Sunday wished schools in the coastal provinces well ahead of the new academic year.
Teachers in these provinces return to school on Monday, with pupils starting on Wednesday.
“Education is the ticket out of the poverty trap,” spokesperson Edmund van Vuuren said in a statement.
“We wish all educators and learners the best for 2015 and we hope that some of the issues that have plagued education in the provinces, such as post provisioning, shortage of teachers and over-crowded classrooms will improve this year.
“Of concern is the quality of our education and low numbers of children who make it all the way through the school system.”
He urged communities and parents to ensure pupils attended school from opening day and to support them. “The DA encourages retired teachers, nurses and policemen to adopt a school and to assist governing councils and senior management teams in addressing challenges that fall within their scope of expertise.”
