Botha says paramedics and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) responded to the scene and when they arrived they were faced with rough seas and gale force winds.
“After he was pulled from the water resuscitation was immediately started to try and revive the unresponsive bather,” says Botha.
“Tragically, despite all the efforts, the man was declared dead at the scene.”
The drowning happened around 3.30pm.
Meanwhile, a nine-year-old girl drowned in a swimming pool in Turffontein, Johannesburg.
Emergency Services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi says the girl drowned in the pool around 3pm.
“The parents of the girl rushed the girl to a nearby fire station in Turffontein, were she was confirmed dead on arrival.”
Mulaudzi has urged parents to make sure their children were supervised while swimming.
“We also want to advise parents to make sure that the swimming pool is secured while not in use by… a safety net and fence around the swimming pool with a locked gate,” added Mulaudzi.
